Denied bond and facing up to 99 years in jail, defendant Jeremiah M. Matthews was recently charged with one count of attempted capital murder of a police officer. Prosecutors say the Houston man stabbed a college campus officer at least 14 times before citizens stepped in to save the victim.
During a court appearance this week, officials revealed that Matthews not only admitted to the crime, but provided a simple, horrifying motive: he just wanted to kill an “oppressive” cop.
Those attempting to explain the crime – Matthew’s lawyer and family, specifically – are blaming a history of mental illness and the anti-police riots of recent days as potential factors.
As for injured officer, 24-year-old April Pikes is struggling to recover after she was admitted to a nearby hospital in critical condition and has since undergone at least one lengthy surgery.
