Following the first Republican presidential primary debate, speculation abounded regarding its impact on Donald Trump’s commanding lead in the polls.
Early reports suggested he actually gained ground on his competitors following Thursday’s performance, though two subsequent polls show support for the brash billionaire waning. Though he is still dominating the field, both Rasmussen and Suffolk University pollsters found his lead has slipped significantly since the debate.
Furthermore, data indicates those who actually watched the debate are less likely to support Trump than those who skipped it. Among members of the former group, Trump is tied for first with Scott Walker.
Nevertheless, conservative pundit and author Ann Coulter cited Trump’s success as a useful road map for the other GOP contenders:
The voters keep saying, “We don’t want any more immigration.” That’s why Trump is so popular. So pick it up, Republicans.
