Florida sheriff pens fiery letter to atheist group trying to strip motto from cruisers

The Freedom From Religion Foundation, a Wisconsin group that threatens lawsuits across the nation in pursuit of its secular mission, recently targeted a Florida sheriff’s office based on its display of the motto ‘In God we trust.’

Walton County Sheriff Michael Adkinson, however, decided to take a stand. In a response letter, he explained that the phrase displayed on his department’s vehicles is both the state and national motto.

He further noted that the decals containing the motto were donated by a private business, negating the FFRF’s concern about taxpayer funding. In conclusion, Adkinson said the group would have to try harder if they want to see him capitulate:

If the Freedom From Religion Foundation wishes us to take them off our vehicles, I suggest that they get a Judge’s order or a new Sheriff.
