Mexican families sue Texas agency for refusing to accept unreliable documents

The Mexican government filed an amicus brief last week in regard to a lawsuit against the Texas Department of State Health Services. According to recent reports, the agency instructed county officials to no longer accept Mexican Consulate-issued identification as proof of a baby’s birth in the U.S.

Dozens of Mexican families are represented in the suit, which claims the children’s 14th Amendment rights were violated.

As GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump and other anti-amnesty advocates continue to contend, however, there remains significant debate regarding the assertion that the American-born children of illegal immigrants are constitutionally guaranteed automatic birthright citizenship.
