Final taxpayer cost of accepting Syrian refugees is staggering

Setting aside the potential safety risks of allowing 10,000 Syrian immigrants to relocate to the U.S., the Heritage Foundation’s Robert Rector recently announced his formula for figuring out the financial cost of Barack Obama’s plan.

Figuring a cost of $130 million per year, he projected the final cost will top $6.5 billion over the lives of the refugees.

Rector arrived at this figure by noting that refugees are obligated to seek permanent resident status, which would make them – and their children – eligible for welfare and other government handouts. Considering legal immigrants without a marketable skill typically take in $4 in benefits for every $1 they pay in taxes, he concluded that the net taxpayer cost of introducing 10,000 refugees would follow a similar trajectory.
