Utah mom claims school policy discriminates against her white daughter

When eighth-grade student Caycee Cunningham returned to Pleasant Grove, Utah, from a recent trip to Guatemala, she brought with her a new religion – accompanied by a revised hairdo.

Her mom, Tonya Judd, explained that she reported to school as usual, only to be sent home for apparently violating Lincoln Academy’s policy that all students must have “combed hair.”

The upset mother reacted by insisting that students of other ethnicities are given a pass when they show up with hairstyles similar to the white teen’s dreadlocks. She explained:

My daughter is white and there happens to be other kids in the school who happen to be other race and ethnicity and they have hair that can’t be combed, and there’s never been an issue regarding that before.

Cunningham, currently a practitioner of Hinduism, is being discriminated against on two fronts, her mother asserted:

Not only have they been racially profiling my daughter because she happens to be a white girl with dreadlocks, but it’s also taking away the rights of my daughter’s religious beliefs and her spiritual journey.

While the school has expressed willingness to compromise on the issue, Judd said she is ready to find a new school for her daughter.
