Even as leftist-controlled cities like San Francisco entice illegal immigrants with so-called sanctuary laws eliminating the threat of deportation, legislators in North Carolina recently took a decidedly different tack.
A new bill easily passed both chambers of the state’s legislature and, assuming it is approved by Republican Gov. Pat McCrory, will prohibit any municipality in the state from becoming a sanctuary city. State Sen. Norman Sanderson affirmed that the need for such a measure is abundantly clear:
It just makes common sense to me that we as a legislature would not do anything that would entice any government entities under our oversight to break the law. I think it’s sad that we’re even having to consider this kind of legislation.
Several cities could be affected by the new legislation. While specific penalties are not included in the current draft, some proponents are calling for punishment to be severe.
Following a San Francisco murder allegedly committed by an illegal immigrant with a long criminal history in the U.S., many prominent Republicans have amplified their public criticism of permissive immigration laws.
