At 21 years old, Charlotte, N.C., resident Semantha Bunce has her hands full with a family that includes a 4-month-old son. Reports indicate she was at home with the child when multiple suspects forced their way into the residence and cornered her in a bedroom.
Bunce was shot at least twice in the incident, which began as she was feeding her son. The mother, a National Guard combat medic, was able to defend herself, though.
Her husband, Paul, said a combination of military training and access to a firearm gave her an edge in the situation. She reportedly opened fire on the intruders, forcing them to retreat.
Paul Bunce explained that his wife first made sure their son was safe, adding:
I think it was a shock to the intruders just as much as it was to her.
As of Thursday, authorities were still looking for suspects in the case.
To aid in her recovery, which is set to include at least one additional surgery, the family has set up an online fundraising page here.
