While gun-owning parents are obligated to keep deadly weapons out of the reach of untrained kids, one recent narrative belies the notion that children should never have access to guns.
Home alone Tuesday afternoon, a 13-year-old Ladson, S.C., boy faced an immediate threat when a man attempted to force his way inside the house. According to authorities, the unidentified child retrieved his mother’s firearm and began firing through the door, hitting 31-year-old Lamar Brown three times.
The suspect fired back with his own gun, the boy told police.
Brown was transported by apparent accomplice Ira Bennett, 28, to a local hospital, where the would-be burglar later died.
Reports indicate Bennett tried to explain Brown’s injuries – and a number of bullet holes in the car – by claiming someone shot at them on the highway.
Bennett is facing criminal charges including first-degree burglary and possession of a firearm while committing a violent crime.
