A cafeteria worker at one Pennsylvania high school left students with a memorable send-off ahead of Christmas break Tuesday, a cell phone video reveals. As WCAU reported, Souderton High School employee Becky Alderfer was participating in a staff karaoke performance, choosing the holiday staple Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas as her song.
Even students preoccupied with their own conversations soon took notice of her powerful voice, erupting in applause following a particularly forceful note.
Though she serves as the music director at her Montgomery County church, Alderfer is admittedly not eager to sign up for solo performances.
“I can count on my hand how many times I’ve done karaoke,” she said. “It’s a little nerve-racking.”
Pam Forster, Alderfer’s supervisor, explained that the entire cafeteria crew joined in encouraging the gifted singer to take part in the student-sponsored exhibition.
“I know what a wonderful voice she has,” Forster explained, “so my staff was like, ‘Well, let’s see if we can get her up there.’”
In return to that show of support, Alderfer said she dedicated the performances – which has been shared extensively among social media users – to her co-workers.
“The lunch ladies were excited,” she said, “and I dedicated the song to them. I thought it had a nice message and I felt like I knew it well enough that I could get through it.”
It is that last point, she cautioned other would-be performers, is key in any recital.
“It works if you can find a song you’re really familiar with,” she said, “otherwise it might be a disaster for everyone!”
