Whether fraternities, sororities or any other gender-specific organization affiliated with Harvard University, their members have just been informed that they will be punished in coming years for joining such “exclusionary” clubs.
Following a report headed by Harvard Dean Rakesh Khurana, the university’s president announced his decision to implement a new policy. By 2021, members of single-gender organizations will be prohibited from serving on in leadership positions at the college. They will also be excluded from consideration for several of the school’s most sought-after scholarships.
“Although the fraternities, sororities, and final clubs are not formally recognized by the College,” President Drew Faust wrote, “they play an unmistakable and growing role in student life, in many cases enacting forms of privilege and exclusion at odds with our deepest values. The College cannot ignore these organizations if it is to advance our shared commitment to broadening opportunity adn making Harvard a campus for all of its students.”
