Oscars: ‘Gender-fluid’ actor eligible in male and female categories

An actor and former contestant on Ru-Paul’s Drag Race is breaking the latest barrier between genders by qualifying for Oscar consideration as both a male and female.

Kelly Mantle, who portrays a transgender prostitute in the independent film Confessions of a Womanizer, was the topic of discussion when the film’s producers were filling out relevant Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences paperwork.

Rules implemented about two years ago meant entertainers had to be classified as either male or female, prompting Confessions producers to argue Mantle should be added to both lists.

The Academy reportedly agreed, making the actor the first biological male who could win an Oscar as a female.
