Albuquerque, N.M., authorities say a U-Haul trailer stolen from a local hotel contained the victim’s deceased father-in-law.

The trailer, along with the SUV towing it, were reported stolen as the vehicle’s owners were driving from Oklahoma to Kirtland, N.M., for the funeral.

Police located the SUV and trailer about three hours later, just blocks from where it was stolen. The body and casket were still inside.

Michael Ayers, who lives near where the vehicle had been dumped, said he “saw the truck there earlier [that] morning and … didn’t think anything of it.”

Authorities believe three individuals arrested following a pursuit later that day were responsible for the theft. The suspects were not immediately charged in relation to that crime as police waited for DNA and fingerprint analysis.
