In what appeared to be an extreme example of price gouging, a Canadian Uber driver said he was charged the equivalent of about $14,400 for a roughly 20-minute ride across Toronto.
The bill — roughly 1,000 times more expensive than an average trip of its length — received widespread public attention on social media after the company initially found that it was legitimate.
Uber provided a response to Slate.
There was an error here and it has been resolved. We have provided a full refund to this rider and apologized to him for this experience. We have safeguards in place to help prevent something like this from happening, and we are working to understand how this occurred.
