Despite sharing a surname with a popular type of pistol, authorities in Ohio say John Derringer was not able to fool the staff of a convenience store he attempted to rob with his homemade replica rifle.

According to WJW, the incident occurred Monday afternoon at a Circle K in Akron.

Police believe Derringer entered the store holding what at first appeared to be a rifle over his head. As one employee began to call authorities, another noticed the suspect was actually holding a collection of odds and ends held together with duct tape in the general shape of a gun.

Derringer allegedly ordered everyone in the store to get on the ground, though when it became obvious that he was not carrying a firearm, a group including employees and customers detained him until police responded to the scene.

He was arrested and jailed on suspicion of aggravated robbery.
